It was bound to happen, with Dollhouse pre-release DVDs having gone out to various reviewers: the unaired pilot and legendary thirteenth episode “Epitaph One” have escaped from FOX’s secret facility and are at large, on the Internet.
Both have been leaked within the last few hours to certain peer-to-peer services which shall remain nameless. Given that these two unseen episodes were particularly attractive to Joss Whedon’s fans, Fox is sure to have concerns over the impact such leaks will have on purchases of the DVDs. One may argue that sales will be relatively unaffected: fans will buy the authentic boxset in any event, even after having seen all the extras.
And, of course, there is a school of thought which holds that rather than being damaging, such low-fidelity leaks can actually expand an audience, potentially increasing sales.
This should in no way be construed to mean we condone such piracy, but we can agree that expanded awareness and viewership of Whedon’s work may be a good thing.
The Dollhouse DVD will be released on July 28, but will be available to Comic-Con attendees starting July 22.
