The Whedon-written and produced The Avengers premiered last week around to world to phenomenal results. Box office estimates reached $136 million in the first two days of release and so far have hit $178 Million.
Update: BoxOfficeMojo is now reporting its opening weekend as being $185M, and having pulled an estimated $218M as of April 30.
While every country’s numbers haven’t been revealed, all indications are this is going to be big. In Australia, where the movie opened April 25, it blew past the competition for a $14 million weekend gross, topping the $9 million pulled by previous #1, The Hunger Games in its premiere.
For its US premiere weekend, May 4, Avengers is predicted to be a blockbuster in the range of $135-$150 million— which would be the second highest opening for any Marvel comics based film, behind Spider-Man 3, and greater than the first weekends of both Thor and Captain America, combined.
I was fortunate enough to catch one of the previews and all I can say is, Wow! Just wow. I didn’t review film earlier because I was still in Avengers afterglow. It is everything you’d expect from Marvel and Joss Whedon with a kick-ass and a cherry on top. All I will tell you is that you will get to know each member of the team— and that this Hulk is the best of all movie Hulks. (In my heart, no one will ever be better than Lou Ferrigno!) There’s enough shock, awe and laughs with room for seconds.
