Cast your minds back to the year 2000. It’s the first season of Angel, spin-off of the hit WB series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As the enigmatic vampire with a soul, Angel snagged the imagination of fans everywhere with his epic love for a vampire slayer. In fact, David Boreanaz as Angel impressed Buffy creator Joss Whedon enough that he along with then partner David Greenwalt moved the vampire to Los Angeles and gave Boreanaz a chance to shine in his own series. For the next five seasons, Angel won critical acclaim with its mix of young adult angst and otherworldly themes.
Right from the start, Angel scribe and producer Tim Minear created one of the series most memorable characters for a season one episode called “Somnambulist,” which aired on January 18, 2000. Penn, played by Jeremy Renner, electrified viewers as Angelus’ tormented and vicious vampire child, resulting in Renner easily becoming one of the most popular guest stars of the series. Son of a protestant minister, the repressed Penn took his human resentments into eternity, killing his “family” over and over through the decades until Kate Lockley (Elisabeth Rohm) staked both Angel and Penn in the tunnels under Los Angeles. Obviously, Angel survived.
Since his appearance on Angel, Renner has been a busy man, working in such high-powered films as S.W.A.T., 28 Weeks Later, North Country and The Hurt Locker. Now he plays opposite Ben Affleck and Jon Hamm (Mad Men) in the creepy bank heist film, The Town. The Town stars Affleck as Doug MacRay, who leads a group of unconscionable back robbers; robbers who’ve so perfected their “craft” that they’ve never been caught, deftly eluding the police and investigators after every job. When MacRay becomes enamoured with a hostage, he risks his crew, his freedom and his life for a romance that is doomed and dangerous. Renner stars as MacRay’s oldest “friend” and a key member of his crew. The movie also stars Blake Lively (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Gossip Girl) and British actress Rebecca Hall (Frost/Nixon, Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974)
Jeremy is also scheduled to reunite with Joss Whedon for the upcoming movie The Avengers, where he will portray Clint Barton, also known to Avenger fans as Hawkeye.
The Town hits big screens everywhere on Friday September 17, 2010.
