Firefly-Serenity Fan Film ‘Browncoats: Redemption’

Fans have never gotten over the abrupt cancellation of Joss Whedon’s Firefly by Fox, and the wounds go deep. That yearning has resulted in a fan base that is very much alive and kicking nearly eight years following the finale episode, “Serenity,” which aired December 20, 2002. Not even the follow-up film of the same name could quell the need for more of this fascinating ‘verse.

Several books have been published following Firefly and the follow-up film, Serenity, and currently comic books are being published which continue the adventures of Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds and her crew. See below for a full list.

The intrepid fans of Whedon’s cult series call themselves Browncoats in honor of the independent faction of the series that fought against Alliance control in the universe. In the series, those who fought in this underdog faction were called Browncoats because of the long, brown dusters they wore as uniforms, the simplicity of which was due mainly to the fact that technology and resources were scarce on the Outer Planets. And for the fans of this fictitiously vibrant world, the name is appropriate, as the fight to save Whedon’s doomed series definitely made these fans the underdogs.

Yet their love for this ‘verse is still passionate today, so much so that several members banded together to create their own adventure honoring Joss Whedon and the cast of Firefly.
