San Diego Comic-Con, the annual celebration of fandom and genre entertainment, is right around the corner, kicking off its 42nd convention in San Diego on Wednesday July 20 “preview” night and running through Sunday July 24. Tickets sold out almost immediately, so if you’re able to attend, hurrah! Attendance reportedly hit 130,000 people last year, stretching the capacity of the San Diego Convention Center — although the official “attendance limit” is 125,000 reached in 2007.
Once again, Joss Whedon will have a major presence, with events and panels featuring Whedon and his pals’ works going on throughout the days. There was fear that Joss would not be attending this year, as Marvel Studios opted out of having an Avengers panel. Fortunately, Dark Horse comics will be sponsoring a variety of Whedon-ful events, bringing Joss as well as his brother Zack to the show, promoting the continuations of the Buffy and Angel franchises in comics.
In addition to panels, the celebrated Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog will be screened, and a staged version will be going on throughout the weekend off-site. And once again, the con will be closed with an audience participation screening of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s musical episode “Once More With Feeling” put together by the excellent folks at Whedonopolis.com
We’ve compiled a handy guide to Whedon-connected and influenced events during the Con for those in attendance (or wishing they were!) These are sure to be packed events with long queues forming, so those attending may have to be picky.
You can see our Whedon-related schedule in full on the Comic-Con site— and import it into your own calendars.
