V’s Morris Chestnut takes a walk on the dark side

Morris ChestnutDuring this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Whedonverse caught up with V’s Morris Chestnut, the human-loving Visitor Ryan Nichols, and got some insightful hints at his character’s future this season.

Chestnut is enjoying his time on V as well as exploring the enigmatic tendencies of his character.  When asked about his character’s shift in loyalties last season and what that might entail for Ryan this year, Morris claims ignorance as to what the writers and producers have in store.  But he does say, “What I do know is that Anna (Morena Baccarin) has my baby, and I’m not sure if I’m going to be on the dark side or the good side, so that should be fun to play with.  I prefer the dark side, but I’m not sure what “the man” has in mind.  Anna’s on the dark side; she gets to slap her daughter, break her legs, she bites the heads off people after sex.  The dark side is kind of sexy!”

If biting heads is your view of sexy!  Whether Ryan Nichols plans on rescuing his child is another subject on which Morris has been kept in the dark.  He hopes that a rescue is in store, but doesn’t know.  “That’s the fun thing about doing a show like ours; sometimes you never know until you pick up the script what’s going to happen.  And then it changes after you read it the first time.”

When asked how it affects him as an actor, how he finds his center when he doesn’t know what’s going to happen with his character, doesn’t truly know his character’s motivations, Morris had this to say; “That’s very tough, its very tough.  We can complain about it but a lot of people have to deal with that.  It’s tough but its fun, getting to explore everything.  And sometimes it’s tough when we shoot an episode and we try to set things up, then we find out exactly why we were doing something in the next episode and we wish we’d known it before.”

While Morris Chestnut may not be privy to what the powers that be have in mind for himself or the season, he does know what he wants for his character.  “I want to be on the dark side more.  I want to be able to go dark side then come back.  I want to disrupt the rebellion, then come back and try to heal it.  When I look at last season, I kinda feel responsible for Val being dead.  If she wasn’t pregnant with my baby she’d still be alive.”  So maybe Morris will get his wish and Ryan Nichols, tortured by the death of Val Stevens (Lourdes Benedicto), will take a walk on the darkside before ultimately finding the redemption he so desperately needs.

One thing Morris is very sure about, and that is while queen alien Anna can be quite creepy, creepy is also very sexy!

ABC’s re-imagined V returns to television midseason, in November.
